Poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The value of the cards in the deck may vary according to the dealer’s rules. An ace, for instance, is considered the lowest card. Similarly, a pair of aces is low. Several cards can be wild, which means they can help create a five-of-a-kind hand.
All poker variants involve at least one betting round. This betting interval occurs after each round of dealing, in which each active player receives a face-up card. The first bettor must bet the minimum amount of chips required in the first round. In subsequent betting intervals, a player can raise or check.
There are three major branches of poker: high-low, stud, and draw. Nearly any type of poker can be played high-low. Players can bet a fixed limit. They may also bet a higher limit, if they are suspected of bluffing. Most modern games require a forced bet. These are called the ante.
High-low is a form of poker that divides the pot between the two highest hands and the two lowest hands. The hand with the lowest value is often a pair of jacks or a deuce, which are often designated as “2.” If a player has a pair of jacks, he or she is said to have “jacked.”
Draw poker is a version of poker that allows a player to discard certain cards to create a new hand. During the draw round, a player can swap up to three cards with the dealer. After the draw, a second betting interval is held. When the second betting interval is over, the dealer shuffles the cards. During the final betting round, a showdown is held.
The first player to act is the player to the left of the dealer, who has the big blind. He or she is required to bet the minimum amount, or the ante, in the first betting interval. Typically, the amount of the ante is based on the stakes of the game. Alternatively, the player to the left of the big blind can bet more or bet less than the ante. Depending on the game, the player to the left of the big or small blind must ante up or put in a small bet, respectively.
Unlike other types of poker, a bluff is not a legal form of betting in a draw or stud poker game. However, in a lowball game, a bluff can be made. For example, a player might bet that they have a pair of jacks, and then raise or call the ante.
